Sound quality is a relevant key factor in the restoration of theatres. Italian theatres, especially Opera Houses, are usually characterized by a typical horseshoe shape. In this paper, an innovative technology has been carried out, in order to predict and optimise acoustical spatialisation in Opera Houses that present singularities in shape and dimension with other classical Italian Theatres. Acoustical characterisation in the main hall of an atypical theatre, both from an experimental and numerical point of view, has been considered aiming to improve spatial parameters. A mathematical model has been developed and many measurements have been performed. Experimental values have been obtained by using of a dummy head (Sennheiser) and a 3D microphone (SoundField), while simulation have been developed by implementing an home made software using Images sources (at Kobe University) and a pyramidal model (at Bologna University). The acoustical design has been conducted in order to improve enveloping and spatialisation especially in the balconies. Different solutions of treatments of the ceiling have been considered and analysed. The sound quality has been greatly improved, particularly in positions quite far from the stage and closed to the ceilings.
