Pushing SMEs to approach 3D modelling techniques: a best practice

This paper presents the results achieved in the scope of IST-2000-31121 Olimp3D project (On Line Interactive Mechanical Parts 3D-Data Base), a Take-Up action in the 1ST programme. As a best practice action, the final objective of OLIMP3D is to demonstrate the benefits that the adoption of 3D VRML interactive representation technologies can bring to small manufacturing companies. The demonstration is based on a controlled and well-focused experiment involving a main user in Spain, Maceda Foundry, and other small companies in Italy and Czech Republic. Using VRML modelling language and Java/Java-script procedures, the aim of Olimp3D project is the development of an interactive Internet-based platform with databases storing 3D models of manufactured goods.
