In the Advanced Technology Maglev APM, there are no track signals or central computer. The guideway, with the exception of a propulsion power rail, is quiescent. The obvious advantages of this approach are significantly reduced guideway construction costs (by about twothirds), construction schedule, and reductions in guideway maintenance. With the introduction of Advanced Maglev Technology in Automated People Mover (APM) Systems, the traditional approach to Automatic Train Control (ATC) is not available. Traditional systems depend on information from a central computer and equipment adjacent to the track to communicate information to and from the computer on-board the train. This communication includes speed, braking, berthing, door control, train location and train separation information. For the System Safety Practitioner, the safety certification of the Advanced Maglev System APM presents challenges through which new and novel paths were identified and verified. This paper will explore some of these challenges and their resolution.
