The interest in halogen-free composites for buildings, mass transport and construction applications continues to grow. Metal hydrates such as alumina trihydrate (ATH) have been used extensively in polyester glass fiber composites to provide fire resistance and reduce smoke and toxic gas emissions. Firepel K133, a commercial halogen-free unsaturated polyester resin, was blended with ATH and ammonium polyphosphate in an attempt to achieve improved flame retardancy over an ATH filled composite. This paper presents neat and filled viscosities, cast resin mechanical properties BSS 7239 toxicity test and ASTM E 84, E 162, E 662, and ASTM E 1354 flammability test results.
