摘要

Friction stir welds were successfully produced in 6.4 mm thick AL-6XN plates with the exception of two welds that contained a wormhole. Friction stir welds were partially successful in 12.7 mm thick AL-6XN. Partial success in joining 12.7 mm thick plates were due to limitations in present pin tool materials and designs available for joining high-strength, thicker-section steels. Current limitations include withstanding high torques, loads, and bending moments at high temperatures during friction stir welding.
