Research on the characteristics of arc acoustic sensing in rotating arc narrow gap MAG welding

Rotating arc narrow gap MAG welding is a high efficient and high quality welding method. It requires real time effective welding quality supervision to overcome the interference. Due to the complexity of the welding process, multi-sensor information fusion has obvious advantages over a single sensor. Besides arc sensing and vision sensing, the arc acoustic sensing obtains rich information but it is seldom studied. In this paper, the arc acoustic source in the welding method was analyzed, and an arc-vision-sound sensing system was set up. Therefore, the time domain and frequency domain characteristics of arc acoustic signal and its cause were studied and analyzed under different welding currents, arc rotating frequencies, gas flow rates and different surface states. The results showed that arc acoustic signal had effective and reliable time domain or frequency domain characteristics under different welding process parameters or conditions. Acoustic sensing was useful for further application of welding quality supervision.
