The background to the use of Al-alloys in the construction of automotive body structures is reviewed briefly and an overview of the self-pierce riveting process given. The results obtained from both static and load-life fatigue tests on two-part riveted shear samples made from Alcan Grade 5754NG rolled Al-alloy sheet material in 1mm, 2mm and 3mm thicknesses, joined with single 5mm diameter steel self-pierce rivets and using three different types of rivet setting equipment are presented and discussed along with a description of key failure modes.
