Here, we show that structural modification of non ultracentrifugation-modified high density lipoproteins (HDL) by phospholipids (PL) generates heterogeneous pre-beta mobility fraction composed of apo A-I and/or apo A-II subpopulations. The sizes analysis of particles within pre-beta mobility fractions obtained at liposomes-PL/HDL-PL ratios 1:1, 3:1 and 5:1 demonstrated the presence of specific classes of particles. They contained, at all incubation ratios, on average 86% lipids. Apo A-II constituted only approximately 1% of total pre-beta particles mass. These results indicate that a small part of apo A-II may cycle between alpha and pre-beta mobility HDL subpopulations.
