Unexpected non-cardiac events within 1 year after drug-eluting stent implantation

Introduction: Long-term treatment with dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) increases the rate of bleeding events. In addition, it has not been elucidated whether DAPT influences the clinical decision-making about the associated diseases.Methods: We retrospectively investigated the unexpected non-cardiac events that occurred in 292 patients with DES implantation within 1 year.Results: Unexpected non-cardiac events occurred in 57 patients, and included 12 cases of bleeding, 13 that required major surgeries, and 8 that required minor surgeries. Cessation of the DAPT for surgeries or invasive procedures was judged to be needed in 31 patients and the scheduling of these were delayed in 5 patients.Conclusions: The occurrence of unexpected events during DAPT was not infrequent. Therefore, patients should be carefully selected to determine whether they are suitable for implantation of DES.
