Saving the Word: A serious game to improve kids reading skills

摘要

Reading comprehension is a cognitive aptitude fundamental for learning and other cognitive skills development. Improving it in elementary school is being looked upon, since the school performance has been related significantly with its proficiency. In this paper is presented "Saving the Word", a serious video game aimed to improve reading comprehension skills for elementary school kids. tackled through its main gameplay mechanic, based on the "fill-the-blank" type of exercise. This mechanic is illustrated and explained in an easy-to-grasp way for the children to understand and enjoy it, as they learn while they play.
