Examples of organic-inorganic cooperative nanocatalysts, in which both organic and inorganic moieties cooperate chemically in the nanospaces, are discussed. An example is previously reported alkyl-grafted TiO2"MCM-41 (Inumaru et al, Micropor. Mesopor. Mater., 2004, 76, 123-130), which showed a high photocatalytic removal performance for dilute nonylphenolpolyethoxylate in water. The alkyl moiety concentrates the substrate molecules into the nanospaces and then the inorganic photocatalytically active moiety (TiO2) decomposes the molecules. Another novel example is designed for hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. Selectivity of the reaction over Pt supported on mesoporous alumina (Pt/MPA) could be controlled by the presence of the organic moiety in the nanospaces.
