In case that the demands for car body steels and chassis steels are the standard for the assessment whether or not a new car body steel is fit for use, than the material costs are the main criteria for the material selection. Other criteria are the availability of such new steels, the degree of ripeness as well as the workability within existing automotive production technologies. Especially for the last point the forming technology as well as the welding technology, here all thermal welding technologies, are key factors and play an important role, whether or not a new car body steel will find its way in the car. Other important points are the reliability with regards to the crash performance, the fatigue life time and the corrosion resistance and not to forget the requests for paintability with regards to surface quality and corrosion protection.
