PREPARATION OF METAL OXIDES BY POLYOL METHOD UNDER MICROWAVE IRRADIATION

We applied microwave (MW, 2.45 GHz) heating to preparation of metal oxides, such as anatase TiO_2 nanocrystallites and zincite ZnO particles, by the polyol method. Anatase TiO_2 nanocrystallites were obtained in 1, 4-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol or 1,6-hexanediol under MW. The crystallite size of TiO_2 less than 10 nm could be controlled by changing the quantity of added water. Submicrometer zincite ZnO particles have been prepared in diethylene glycol under MW irradiation by the polyol method. The smaller particles were formed as the secondary aggregates under MW heating when compared to conventional heating, where the sizes of the primary crystallites were the same. The aggregation of the primary crystallites was suppressed under MW irradiation.
