A new chloride ion conducting solid electrolyte with high Cl~- ion conductivity, low solubility in water and high thermal stability was prepared from the Mg~(2+) substituted LaOCl. The Cl~- ion conductivity in LaOCl increased by replacing the La~(3+) site for Mg~(2+) and the highest Cl~-ion conductivity which was 20 times higher than that of pure LaOCl was obtained for La_(0.8)Mg_(0.2)OCl_(0.8) (x=0.2). The Cl~- ion conduction in the solid solution was identified by dc and ac conductivity measurements in various atmospheres.
