A new chloride ion(Cl~-) conducting solid electrolyte, calcium doped lanthanum oxychlorides which show a high stability even in a high humid and at elevated temperatures, was developed. The Cl~- ion conductivity of oxychlorides doped with 20mol percent Ca is approximately 1.8X10~(-2) S centre dot cm~(-1) at 800 deg C and the Cl~- ion transference number is estimated to be almost unity. The present Cl~- ion conducting solid electrolytes, which are insoluble in water and hold a high stability even in elevated temperatures are greatly expected to be applied for functional materials such as Cl_2 gas sensor, etc.
