China has undergone an economic transformation in little more than two decades Even though the industry in China is 2,500 years old, aquaculture remains a young and blooming activity because of the country's deep civilization, huge social demand, andcapacity for reform. There is also potential for Chinese aquaculture to benefit from the activities of many other countries, particularly those of developed countries, where aquaculture is rather recent and many new scientific innovations have been made.In the coming 10-20 years, the big challenge will be to combine conventional scientific technology with the promise of the revolution in life sciences. Production and production efficiency in Chinese aquaculture will increase through increased scientific inputs, the extension of genetically improved varieties, the diversification of farmed species, and the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable high-productivity systems.
