Beginning with the notion of the roughness which is the primary surface texture, reviews the fundamental methods of m assessing the roughness, studies and puts forward a quick means of determining the surface roughness with wavelet which the proper wavelet transform locally suitable to the surface texture is applied to collect the feature of the roughness, followed by the accurate value of the roughness by using Matlab program. Experimental study has been carried out with mild carbon steel on lathe of CK6142 and vibratory frequency, amplitude, tool minor cutting edge main factors. Under the machining conditions given, the prop may be obtained with values of 200~240 μm for amplitude, for frequency, and 6°~10° for tool minor cutting edge experiments has also been shown that the means presented here is workable and practical and may be used on-line as the technical basis of the automatic production.
