Introduction: Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery Systems are used more frequently and more commonly in orthopaedic surgery. One of the keys for a precise measurement and alignment is the measuring device itself. Most of the navigation system manufacturers are using standard Optical Tracking Devices (OTD). The aim of this study was to measure and validate the precision of a standard and commercially available OTD taking into account the conditions of use under several different questions. Objectives: The first objective was to develop a calibrated and validated tool for precision measurements of OTDs, according to existing regulations [1,2]. The second objective was to measure the precision of OTDs in relation to the power-on time and to measure OTDs with different age and after a varying number of uses. Design/Methods: A precision measurement tool was developed, calibrated, and validated, based on common industrial standards for optical device measurement [1, 2]. The entire measurement volume of one type of OTD was measured at several positions in order to classify the precision of the imaging system. Self-developed software was used to guide through the measurement process.
