Identification of sintering additives that simultaneously lead to high-toughness and a highly refractory, intergranular glassy film after complete densification has proved challenging. In this study, SiC ceramics sintered with AlN-Re{sub}2O{sub}3 (Re=Y, Yb, Er, Lu) have been prepared and their strength at 1600°C was investigated. Microstructural features of SiC with AlN-Er{sub}2O{sub}3, which showed the best strength of 550 MPa at 1600°C, were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
