An aerated static pile system was developed to alternately draw or blow air into a batch system of compost piles. The 5,000 cubic yard system was developed to address concerns relating to excessive moisture and the potential for nuisance odors. The system proved there was a relationship between moisture and odor, that allowed both to be improved simultaneously. Exhaust from the piles was discharged through a biofilter. Feedstock preparation, energy use, and economics are the critical success factors considered.
