摘要

The general goal of this research and development program was to develop the211u001eengineering fundamentals and practices necessary for improving compost reactors 211u001eor systems design, to minimize odor production, and enhance compost stabilization 211u001ethrough the use of supplementary heating with natural gas and moisture 211u001emanagement. This goal was accomplished through experimental studies using bench-211u001escale and pilot-scale compost reactors, and through computer modeling and 211u001eanalysis. Analysis of the gaseous emissions showed that the types of odor emitted 211u001efrom composting systems were substrate-specific; methylmercaption (MeSH), 211u001edimethyl sulfide (DMS), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) were all emitted in 211u001esignificant quantities from SFW and wood chip mixes, while DMDS was the only odor 211u001eemitted in significant quantities from biosolids and wood chip mixes. Non-odorous 211u001eantecedents emitted from composting systems were also found to be substrate-211u001especific; H2 and CO were identified as potentially useful antecedents in SFW 211u001ecomposting, while CH4 and CO were identified as potentially useful BSW-based 211u001esystems.
