Comparison of Aircraft and Other Mobile Source Engine Testing Procedures

Aircraft engine testing procedures are presented for gaseous and particulate mass measurements. These procedures are compared to those of other mobile source engine testing procedures. The procedures addressed include SAE 1533; EPA Method 5; Code of Federal Regulations; California Code of Regulations; ICAO Annex 16, Volume II; and ISO 8178. Sample data are provided for illustration. Engine exhaust particle size distribution procedures are also discussed. Particle size distribution data collected by the Navy Aircraft Environmental Support Office are presented for some gas turbine engines using JP-5 fuel and compression ignition engines using JP-8 fuel. These data indicate that the particulate emissions from these sources are less than 1.0 micron in diameter and must be included in air emissions inventories.
