Surgical management of urinary tract trauma

Traumatic injury to the urinary tract in small animals is usually the result of automobile accidents. Gunshot wounds, bite wounds, and iatrogenic injuries can also damage urinary structures. Rupture of the urinary bladder is the most common injury, followed by rupture of the kidney, urethra and ureter. Injury of the urinary tract should be considered in any animal that has had blunt trauma. Clinical examination, laboratory and radiographic findings, contrast uroradiological techniques, and sometimesexploratory surgery are necessary to identify the source of urine leakage.
