STEEL MILL WASTE PROCESSING ON A ROTARY HEARTH FURNACE TO RECOVER VALUABLE IRON UNITS

Steel mill waste oxides such as BF and BOF dusts, sludges and scales are being processed successfully and recycled by the steel industry. Those operations containing EAF dust can also recycle the zinc oxide component on a rotary hearth furnace. Experience has shown that each steel mill has its unique operating conditions and integration of waste oxide plants and recycling of products requires careful review and evaluation. Examples of this integration is the transport and receiving of materials from the steel operations. Transport may be a long distance and come by truck or train. Loading or transfer may be pneumatic or gravity and conveyance. Product DRI can be returned to either BF, BOF or EAF. In some cases, the product DRI can be integrated i with steel mill operation as a hot material recovering some energy as well. Economics plays a role in any recycling process. Avoidance of waste disposal costs have to be measured along with product credits and debits for recycling of by-products. The value of recycling can vary a great deal between steel mills. As pressure to close down landfills increases, the incentive to implement recycling processing such as the DRyIron~(~R) technology increases. Koros' claim that "dusts, scale, slags, sludges... not wastes, but sources of profits" is being practiced today in the steel industry worldwide.
