Healthcare track 2002 implementing the IOM recommendations

The second Institute of Medicine report on healthcare quality, "Crossing the Quality Chasm," looks at the broad subject of healthcare quality and makes recommendations for all stakeholders. Key among these is the following Agenda for Improvement. Healthcare should be: ·Safe. It should not injure patients seeking care. ·Effective. Services should be based on scientific knowledge. ·Patient Centered. Consider individual needs and values in care decisions. ·Timely. Reduce wait time for patients and providers. ·Efficient. Avoid waste of equipment, supplies, ideas, and energy. ·Equitable. Care should not vary with gender, race, location, or socioeconomic status. The various speakers in this year's Healthcare Track will describe a number of strategies for improving healthcare. Hopefully, these strategies will not result in the sort of "Brownian motion" that has characterized previous efforts to improve healthcare. Those in the audience are encouraged to challenge each speaker to define how his strategy will further the above six goals.
