Chalcohalide glasses (70Ge{sub}0.25As{sub}0.10S{sub}0.65-15GaS{sub}(3/2)-15CsBr) doped with Ho{sup}(3+) emitted 1.64μm fluorescence with a long lifetime (τ{sub}m~ 3.3ms), which can provide the efficient signal-gains in U-band (1.62~1.65μm) for the future wide-band WDM network. Co-doping and up-conversion process were also discussed for the efficient depopulation of the lower metastable 5{sup left}(I{sub}7) level. The cross-relaxation mechanism responsible for the fluorescence quenching along Ho{sup}(3+) concentration was elucidated based on the energy transfer theory. The optimum of the Ho{sup}(3+) concentration for the efficient optical amplification in U-band was estimated about 0.20% in mole.
