This paper outlines the use of specially adapted drilling equipment, and the safe working methods employed in the investigation of unstable ground above a steep abandoned quarry face. Ground slopes varied between 18° and 27° and there was no significant barrier between these slopes (which had previously collapsed and not been fully stabilised) and a quarry face, with inadequate benching being more than 50m high, including a 10m slope in superficials with no rockhead bench. The method of investigation needed to allow for active movements in the ground under consideration. The investigation was a direct consequence of the failure to make the most basic geological and geotechnical inquires before quarrying.
