The use of mass vaccination combined with unidirectional flow, breeding herd closure and/or partial depopulation has been successful on PRRS control and eradication. However, the effect on PRRSV persistence and transmission in those previously infected populations has not been studied. PRRSV persistently infected pigs have been detected by PCR up to 120, 135 and 157 days post-inoculation (DPI) on experimentally conditions. Transmission of PRRSV from experimentally infected pigs to naive sentinels has been reported up to 86 DPI.
