Emerging technologies in reproduction: How the Danes have reached 30 pigs/sow/year

The Danish pig industry has reached a new milestone during the past few years with the first commercial operations reaching the long sought goal of 30 pigs/sow/ year. In 2001, the average Danish producer farrowed 12.1 pigs live and weaned 10.5 pigs per litter that were 30 days old. With average U.S. sow herds weaning less than 9 pigs per litter, our industry can learn a great deal from our Danish counterparts. Even the top 10% of U.S. sow herds weaned 1.4 fewer pigs per litter than the best 25% of Danish herds. U.S. producer's that have committed to the Danish genetic program in recent years are experiencing similar success. Seventy-percent of Danbred's maternal customers are currently producing over 25 pigs/sow/year.
