Aerosolization and detection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) under different climatic conditions

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has considerable impact to the pig industry. Despite preventive vaccination, outbreaks of the disease still occur, emphasizing the importance of biosecurity as an additional control measure against this virus. Transmission by both direct and indirect contact as well as the vertical route have been reported. More recently, also airborne transmission of PRRSV over distances up to 9 kilometres was confirmed in aerosol experiments. This paper describes a first pilot-experiment to detect PRRSV in air samples under experimental conditions using a device different from the one previously used in the US.
