FAULT DETECTION DESIGN AND EXPERIENCE FOR NMP EARTH OBSERVING 1

The Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) spacecraft has already far exceeded the science observations required for mission success. A NASA New Millennium Program (NMP) mission dedicated to validating revolutionary technologies that will be used in future government and commercial missions, EO-1 was launched in November 2000 and orbits in close formation with Landsat-7. Developed under the faster-better-cheaper philosophy, EO-1 is an example of a successful low-cost mission with very little redundancy. This paper provides a summary of the fault detection & recovery design elements, system implementation issues, attitude control system, safe hold mode and on-orbit operational experiences for the primary one year mission. A review of the unique issues associated with implementing fault protection and safing for the new generation of small, inexpensive single-string spacecraft is also presented.
