An extensive experimental program has been carried out on Glare sheet materials with two purposes, (1) to investigate the occurrence of MSD and (2) to determine the residual strength of a panel with MSD in front of a through-the-thickness crack due to severe impact damage. The fatigue tests illustrated that the occurrence of MSD in Glare in a rivet row is not likely to occur within the DSG of an aircraft, not even if all holes contain initial flaws. Link-up and final failure for specimens with open holes and filled holes with a large "lead" crack due to severe impact damage can be predicted with the use of the KR - curve approach as long as the fatigue crack growth is limited.
