Allan Brunton-Reed and Michael Allen placed great faith in me by asking that I deliver the inaugural paper for this ITS 2002 conference. Traditionally the inaugural speaker is given a free hand to choose a topic and I thought I might take advantage of this liberty and bring you up-to-date on what has been happening at the Salvage Association, albeit briefly, then I wish to look at past ITS conferences; mention some of the issues that are in front line at the moment and finally take a brief glance into the future. On a personal note, the ITS conference is one that I genuinely look forward to and I am humbled by being asked to follow on this morning from the Mayor of Bilbao.
