COMPARISON OF PATHOGENIC EFFECT OF DIFFERENT PCV2 INOCULA ON DEVELOPMENT OF PMWS

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is causally associated with the development of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), a disease affecting primarily 5- to 12-week-old piglets, and characterised by weight loss, dyspnoea, and jaundice combined with the pathological findings of interstitial pneumonia, lymphoadenopathy, hepatitis, and nephritis (1). In a previous study, we have shown that experimental inoculation of 3-week-old SPF PCV2-seronegative piglets using a tissue homogenate containing PCV2 resulted in the development of PMWS in 4 out of 10 inoculates (2). However, the use of cell culture propagated PCV2 isolates would provide a source of inoculum for future experiments. The aim of this study was therefore to compare the pathogenic effect of the tissue homogenate containing PCV2 to cell culture propagated PCV2.
