A discrete optimization scheme conjugated with the probabilistic optimization algorithms (Genetic -GA and Simulated Annealing -S.A. Agorithms) and the FE analysis is proposed and discussed herein. The first part of the paper is devoted to the classification of the optimization problems and to the introduction of coding method of continuous design variables. A particular attention is focused on the generalization of coding method in the sense of possible applications of algorithms independently on the form of objective functions (functionals). Then, two different approaches to the problems of material (topology) optimization are demonstrated. The discussed methods have been utilized in solving of particular optimization problems for plate under shear loading and axially symmetric domed head.
