DIFFERENCES IN SPERM OUTPUT IN BOARS ACCORDING TO SEASON

Boars used in artificial insemination programs must present spermatic production of high quality, with as little variability as possible. They should produce fertile inseminating doses, with constant productivity throughout the year. In spite of this,a high variability (in the order of25-30%) is usually present between seasons of the year. To compensate this fluctuation in spermatic production, artificial insemination centers (AIS) are pressed to maintain higher boar numbers than production needs (2). The objective of this study was to assess the influence of the season of the year in quantitative and qualitative parameters in boar ejaculates.
