In the last four years the investigation on abrasive waterjets for the use in orthopaedic surgery was performed very intensively by research groups in Hamburg and Hannover. As abrasive materials in this tests water soluble and biocompatible abrasive have been used. Due to a comparatively small cutting performance of the used abrasive materials like disaccharide it was searched for other applicable abrasives. Motivated by successful tests for the use of biodegradable magnesium for orthopaedic implants magnesium powder with same material composition was selected. In this paper first results of cutting tests with this new type of abrasive material and experiences regarding the handling of the two components magnesium and water will be presented.
