Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) has been suggested to be a syndrome rather than a disease. This syndrome is often connected to a systemic pathology and is always secondary to an underlying disease. DIC is characterised by a systemic activation of coagulation system, with the generation and deposition of fibrin and micro vascular thrombi in various organs. It is a systemic thrombohaemorrhagic disorder associated with a well-defined clinical situation, laboratory evidence of procoagulant activation, fibrinolytic activation, inhibitor consumption and biochemical evidence of end-organ dysfunction.
