As the domain of computers one can access for high performance computing grows, heterogeneity among computers employed for a task also increases. Therefore, it is important to understand how heterogeneity affects performance of tasks, in order to optimally utilize heterogeneous computers. Heterogeneity may be classified into temporal heterogeneity and spatial heterogeneity where the former refers to variation of computing power available for a task on a computer along the time dimension while the latter represents variation of the available computing power among computers. In this study, effects of the temporal and spatial heterogeneity on performance of a target task have been analyzed in terms of average parallel execution time and standard deviation of parallel execution time as an effort to suggest an approach to distributing a target task over heterogeneous computers for improving its performance.
