One of the problems related to system study is that of inferring a description of the system from observations of its behavior. When this description is in linguistic terms (using words instead, or in addition of equations) the result is a linguistic model. This paper describes an approach to linguistic modeling based on fuzzy sets applied to modeling the meaning of various linguistic descriptions for lifting task variables. The model aims at capturing the correspondence between numerical values and their qualitative/linguistic descriptions as perceived by human experts (workers performing lifting). The performance of the model obtained is compared to that using a neural network approach.
