Insights Into The Brain Mechanism For Reading Using MSI and Electrocortical Stimulation Mapping

Magnetic source imaging (MSI) is unique among functional imaging methods in that it is able to provide spatiotemporal brain activation profiles in relation to the presentation of an external stimulus. Thus, functional connections between active brain areas during tasks that engage complex linguistic functions, such as reading, can be determined. The general outline of the activation profile that is specific to reading features, initially, bilateral activation of occipital regions, followed by activity in left basal temporal cortices. Next, activity is noted in temporoparietal and inferior frontal areas, predominantly in the left hemisphere, and in the middle temporal gyms (MTGp) bilaterally. The most prominent activation site within the temporoparietal region is in the posterior portion of the superior temporal gyrus (STGp). As shown in Figure 1, the distinct pattern of left superior temporal activation is observed in both adults and young children during the early stages of reading acquisition, with an activation peak between 350-700ms in adults and 600-900ms in children.
