Republic of Macedonia is a disaster prone country exposed to natural and man-made hazards like earthquakes, floods, wildfires, landslides, epidemics, etc. Although relatively rare, the earthquakes are paramount, overwhelming the effects of all disasters that can affect the country. Recently performed seismic risk analyses of the schools in Republic of Macedonia for three levels of expecting shaking: large scale (LSE), moderate scale (MSE) and frequent scale earthquake (FSE) scenarios, for ten dominant source zones and for two maximum occupancy rates (12:00h and 17:00h) have revealed the fact that 26.9% of the total school building area will be damaged and collapsed and 2.5% and 0.8% of the total number of pupils will be injured or dead for FSE scenario. In order to mitigate the expected consequences caused by unfavorable behavior of school occupants and to provide proper management of earthquake emergencies in schools, in collaboration with UNICEF Skopje Office, a strategy for physical and psychological management of earthquake emergency situations has been defined.
