We demonstrated a fast analog electro-optic effect in the reflective antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) cell with a single polarizer and a retardation film in a vertical configuration (VC). In this configuration, a completely dark state is naturally obtained with no additional processes since the helicoidal structure with a short pitch behaves as an optically isotropic medium. Furthermore, the reflective VC-AFLC mode exhibits a more stable layer structure than a reflective deformed helix ferroelectric LC mode in the vertical configuration.
