PURPOSE: A vertically aligned antiferroelectric LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device is provided to vertically align antiferroelectric liquid crystal between two substrates, and perform uniform alignment using mutually alternating parallel electrodes arranged in only one surface of the two substrates. CONSTITUTION: A first and a second glass substrates(10,50) of which each one surface faces with each other. A first electrode(20) formed in a first surface of the first glass substrate(10) has a first electric potential. A second electrode(30) formed in the first surface of the first glass substrate(10) has a second electric potential different from the first electric potential. A first vertical alignment layer(40) is formed on the first surface of the first glass substrate(10) in which the first and second electrodes(20,30) are formed. A second vertical alignment layer(60) is formed on a first surface of the second glass substrate(50). Antiferroelectric liquid crystal(70) is injected between the first and second glass substrates(10,50) where the first and second vertical alignment layers(40,60) face with each other, and has a spiral pitch shorter than the wavelength of light. And the antiferroelectric liquid crystal(70) in which molecules rotate in a specific direction by responding to an electric field formed between the first and second electrodes(20,30). A first polarizer(80) is installed on a second surface of the first glass substrate(10). And a second polarizer(90) is installed on a second surface of the first glass substrate(50) has polarization orthogonal with the first polarizer(80).
