Cognitive, Social, and Psychopathoiogica! Factors in the Comprehensive Treatment of Schizophrenia

Recent research findings suggest that the early course of schizophrenia, perhaps even before the outburst of positive symptoms, may be decisive for the outcome of the disorder. In psychosocial treatment programs, besides psychopatho-logical symptoms, cognitive impairments and the nonfulfillment of social roles should be addressed directly. Work with families plays a central role in early rehabilitation. We present research data on the issues of family burden, families' satisfaction, and the efficacy of the Optimal Treatment Program (OTP) program in early psychosis cases.
