In Korea, an evaluation for licensing decision is under way for an advanced nuclear power plant where many kinds of digital instruments and computerized interfaces are utilized. This paper reports a series of observational studies on a CBP(computer-based procedure) for an advanced MCR(main control room). The purpose is to examine possible effects of using CBPs. We have empirically evaluated the current version of the CBP by observing, videotaping, and analyzing the communication while the operating crew carries out an emergency operating procedure, LOCA(Loss of Coolant Accident). We have compared three sessions, one with the PBP (paper-based procedure) at the conventional MCR, another with the PBP at the advanced MCR, and the third with the CBP at the advanced MCR. We have found that communication pattern among the operating crew is changing, especially when the crew performs the emergency operating procedure with the CBP at the advanced MCR.
