For improved quality and machinability of ceramic green bodies the use of organic additives is necessary. During the debindering process the polymers are thermally decomposed and partly emitted as ecotoxicological relevant components. The aim of this study was to determine and to quantify these components during pyrolysis regarding minimization of emission of undesirable pyrolysis products. Three organic polymers frequently used in ceramic industry were investigated: polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG). For decomposition experiments high reproducibility was achieved using a special tube furnace. For this purpose cylindrical Al_2O_3 green bodies containing a typical content of organic additives were pressed and heated. To gather the differently volatile decomposition products, a branched sampling system with different adsorbents was developed. After elution of the different adsorbents separation and quantification of the pyrolysis products were performed using GC/MS and HPLC.
