We documented differences in telomere length among granulocytes, CD4+ T-helpers, CD8+ T-suppressors and CD19+ B-cells in 19 recipients with respect to donors after allogeneic and syngeneic BMT. The mean difference in telomere length was most pronounced in T-suppressors (-1.07 +- 0.38 kb), followed by B-cells (-0.94 +- 0.27 kb), granulocytes (-0.46 +- 0.26 kb) and T-helpers (-0.45 +- 0.24 kb). Lower cell dose was associated with more telomere shortening in the T-suppressor compartment, and there was a significant difference between allogeneic and syngeneic BMT in this subset. Telomere lengthening was observed in white cell sub-populations of some recipients. The T-suppressor population accounts significantly towards telomere shortening as measured in total peripheral blood leucocytes and may be related to its expansion after BMT.
