A new technology, using a conventional ferrosilicon furnace for campaign productions of high quality silicon alloys for the TCS and fumed silica production, metallurgical applications in the foundry and aluminum casting industries, and the potential for MCS production, is described. The challenge of this development was the transfer from one grade to the other without any downtime caused by hardware modifications or major time-consuming adjustments. SKTEC allows optimum process configurations and minimize production costs to a level equal or better than in dedicated furnaces. This development has taken place in the last years and resulted in patents granted or pending in most of the silicon alloy producing countries.
