Melt transporting and cooling channel - with top and bottom air cooling system used in metallurgical glass and chemical industries, esp. used in glass forehearth system

A melt transporting and cooling channel, of width at least three times the melt height, has insulated side walls opt. with a roof contg. vertical shafts with displaceable covers and allows direct or indirect heating of melt edge regions. The novelty is that an air inlet (7) is provided continuously or at certain points along the underside of the channel floor (2), which is opt. insulated in this region with insulation having a heat transmission coefficient of max. one-quarter that of the side wall insulator (8), and extends over at least one-third of the cooling zone length of the channel and up to the entire width of the channel, the air inlet(s) (7) being regulated by partitions and the air throughput being regulated. An identical air inlet (7) is provided at the channel roof (4). The side wall insulation (8) extends to the region of the air inlets (7) at the floor (2) and the roof (4). USE/ADVANTAGE - In the metallurgical, glass and chemical industries, e.g. for forehearth systems in the glass industry. The channel provides intense cooling of the melt during transport and delivers melt having a low temp. difference over its cross-section.
